Sell Your Hametz before Passover

Traditional Jewish law (see Exodus 12:19) forbids owning any hametz (leavened foods) during Passover. While it’s ideal to consume or donate (e.g., to a soup kitchen) all hametz prior to the morning before Passover starts, rabbinic tradition allows for the sale of hametz to a non-Jew, even while it remains on your premises.

If you would like to sell your hametz through Makom, please complete and sign the linked form (in either doc or pdf format), scan it, and email it to aaron@makomTO.org by 9:00am on Thursday, March 29.

Or you may mail the completed and signed form to: Makom, 402 College St., Toronto, ON M5T 1S8. Mailed forms must reach Makom by Wednesday, March 28.

There is no fee for this service. Donations to Makom are appreciated (minimum suggested donation of $18). You may donate online or mail a cheque along with your form.

Please note: Matzah won’t be Kosher for Passover but it’s still a fun and wonderful way to prepare for Pesach!

Makom Afterschool’s Open House is a chance to learn about the program, see our students and teachers in action, meet Afterschool parents, and have all your questions answered by Makom’s Director of Education Rabbi Emma Gottlieb.

Afterschool registration for families who attend the Open House will open 1 week earlier than it will for the general public (April 8).

About Makom Afterschool: For grades JK – 4. Through play-based, experiential education, our students are immersed in a Hebrew-speaking environment centered around Jewish values. On the two core-curriculum afternoons each week, students focus on Hebrew speaking and literacy through games, stories, songs, and Jewish holiday. Additionally, students can attend our optional Jewish Enrichment day, where they learn about Jewish holidays, Torah stories, Jewish values, and traditions. Two further optional afternoons teach Hebrew through activities structured around the arts (music, drama, visual art) and movement (yoga, games, sports).

In a striking new neon light installation, Toronto-based and Beijing-born multidisciplinary artist Shellie Zhang reimagines marquee signage to represent two significant cultural institutions established by Chinese and Jewish newcomers to Toronto in the same building at the corner of Dundas and Spadina. First known as the Standard Theatre, the venue opened as a Yiddish theatre in 1922 and five decades later hosted Chinese cinema as the Golden Harvest Theatre. The artist considers how one building served as a locus for cultural expression and cohesion for two different communities. Accompanied by a detailed overview of the building’s colourful history and reproductions of archival materials, the exhibition surfaces immigrant narratives embedded in the architecture of the Kensington Market-Chinatown neighbourhood, revealing little-known points of connection and breaking down siloed conversations about our city’s past.

Musician, singer/songwriter, actor and entrepreneur, Evan Malach is the 1^st-place winner of Israel’s Hallelujah Global Jewish Singing Contest. He has written two musicals, including A Simple Twist of Faith, an original piece based on a true story of Jewish survival through kindness. When All is One is his third full-length album of Jewish roots rock and he is currently working on a fourth album of original songs. Evan’s music has enabled him to perform around the world; we’re excited to have him play back home at Makom!

Dana Sipos inhabited the far north before going nomad and her hypnotic, tenderly skewed songs are filled with a wild wind. She tours extensively, occasionally by bicycle, tall ship, canoe and train. Her last album, Roll Up the Night Sky, released on underground Nashville label Muddy Roots Records, was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award in the Pushing the Boundaries category. A new album, recorded with experimental Toronto producer Sandro Perri and featuring a breadth of Canadian talent, will be released on Roaring Girl Records in spring 2018.
